Into the Ashlands
Aethelstan is the keep and surrounding city ruled by Eorl Aethelstan, the younger brother of Frea Uilfrid. Aethelstan is a center of magical knowledge and tolerance, due to the policies of the Eorl. The people of Aethelstan are largely open-minded toward outsiders, and the Eorl is well loved. The theows of Aethelstan live longer and more content lives than those that work the land of many other fiefdoms, and Aethelstan has become a popular haven for refugees from other lands and Galoranders seeking a better life alike.
The center of Aethelstan is a keep on a large hill, with shops, homes, and farms spilling out into the surrounding lands. A huge, grey stone tower looms over the small city, where Aethelstan meets and consults with his arcane council of twelve. The city is watched over by the town guard, who answer to Aethelstan’s personal royal guard in all things.
Aethelstan is a center of trade in Galdoran, and the seat of the kingdom’s arcane, scholarly, and cultural pursuits. Rumors run rampant through the rest of the land of magical goings-on in Aethelstan, and many commoners are afraid of the small city and consider it a den of sin where sorcerers consult with otherworldly beings. The Eorl Osgard has openly challenged Eorl Aethelsan’s policies on magic and open borders, and has called for his abdication of the Eorldom.
